The key to irritation-free accessories is knowing what types of metal alloys you might be allergic to. Once you know this, it is much easier to choose your jewelry purchases including silver plated pieces.
The number one culprit known to cause a skin reaction is nickel or one of nickel's cross-reactants, cobalt. They are often found in silver jewelry rather than gold or platinum.
Stainless steel, which is very allergenic, is a good alternative because the quantity of nickel is very low or even non-existent, and the strength of the steel prevents the release of nickel and therefore irritation of the skin.
What should you avoid when buying jewelry?
